What are Startups?

Startups are exciting new companies that are hoping to shake up their industry and grow rapidly.  They are often technology based, and capable of expanding internationally fast.

Startups often raise capital aggressively as they look to quickly grow and will seek multiple rounds of investment from individuals (Angel Investors) and professional investors like Venture Capital Funds and Private Equity Firms.

Startups are high risk investments, with many of them failing before they become profitable.  However, some do succeed, and become large companies that can dominate their industries.  Investors in startups often try to invest in multiple different ones, so that even if some of them are not successful, the others that are successful can make up for it.

Some examples of startups you might know are Facebook, Amazon, Twitter, Spotify, Uber, and WealthSimple.

When should I expect Returns from my Startup Investment?

Individuals investing in startups should not expect the company to pay they any returns in the short to medium term, and should expect to wait many years for any potential returns to materialize.  Investors in startups often make their money (exit) either when the startup is acquired by another larger corporation or when the startup goes public and lists on a stock market (IPO).

Each startup is different.  Read the details and future plans of each startup listed on Equivesto on their campaign page to get a better idea of when you might expect returns.
